Wrong pipe choice for a borewell can mean pump failure, contaminated water, or a costly replacement within 2–3 years. This guide covers everything — pipe type, gauge, size and depth — for borewells in Hyderabad and Telangana.
Hyderabad borewells typically go 100–400 ft deep with submersible pumps. UPVC column pipes are the industry standard — they don't rust, don't add taste to water, are lightweight (easy to install and remove), and cost less than GI for the same depth. For depths over 500 ft in rocky Telangana terrain, upgrade to 20G or 19G.
| Property | UPVC Column Pipe (Ashirvad) | GI Pipe |
|---|---|---|
| Rust | ✅ Never rusts | ⚠️ Rusts inside after 8–12 years |
| Water quality | ✅ Tasteless, odourless | ⚠️ Metallic taste when pipe ages |
| Weight | ✅ Light — easy to pull out | ❌ Heavy — needs extra labour |
| Installation | ✅ Push-fit socket — fast | Threading and coupling — slow |
| Maintenance | ✅ Pull out, inspect, reinstall | Hard to pull GI string |
| Cost | ✅ Lower | Higher |
| Lifespan | 20–30 years | 10–15 years (before rust) |
| Socket | ✅ Included with every pipe | Purchased separately |
| Ideal depth | Up to 500 ft | Any depth (heavier gauge) |
Ashirvad column pipes come in 3 grades. For borewells, gauge refers to wall thickness — and unlike the general rule, in column pipes a lower gauge number means a thicker, stronger pipe.
Each column pipe is 10 ft (3.05 m) long including the socket joint.
| Borewell Depth | Pipes Needed (approx) | Recommended Gauge | Estimated Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 ft | 5–6 pipes | 27G Heavy | ₹1,600–2,400 |
| 100 ft | 10–11 pipes | 27G or 20G | ₹3,200–4,800 |
| 150 ft | 15–16 pipes | 20G Medium | ₹5,850–7,200 |
| 200 ft | 20–21 pipes | 20G Medium | ₹7,800–9,600 |
| 300 ft | 30–32 pipes | 19G Light | ₹14,400–18,000 |
| 400 ft | 40–42 pipes | 19G Light | ₹19,200–24,000 |
Prices based on 4" column pipes. 5" and 6" cost more. Always buy 2–3 extra pipes as reserve.
