FR vs FRLS wires: what to specify

Understand insulation labels, conductor sizes and the details that make a wire enquiry useful.

Nova Trading · 23 September 2026 · 4 min read

Start with the insulation designation

The supplied June 2026 list separates FR and FRLS single-core building wires from Safe & Sure flexible cables. FR identifies flame-retardant insulation; FRLS identifies flame-retardant, low-smoke insulation. These labels describe insulation characteristics. Neither label alone determines the conductor size required for a circuit.

Size the conductor for the circuit

Ask the electrical designer to select conductor area using the load, cable route, installation method, grouping, ambient conditions and permissible voltage drop. A current value printed in a price list is not a universal rating for every installation. Longer routes and grouped cables can change the selection. Keep the conductor specification and protective-device selection together.

Check the order unit

The FR and FRLS tables list 90 m and 180 m coil options. Quote the insulation type, cross-sectional area, colour and coil length on the purchase order. The flexible-cable section contains a 100 m heading alongside 90 m table columns, so obtain written confirmation of the supplied length before comparing prices.

Build a clear enquiry

For a house wiring enquiry, send a circuit schedule or material list with wire type, size, colour and quantity. For a flexible connection, add the core count and application. Ask for the exact catalog number and a current quote; the dated manufacturer MRP should not be treated as a project-specific selling price.
