Switching and protection are separate functions
A contactor switches a circuit under control. Motor protection may involve an overload relay, a motor protection device and coordinated short-circuit protection. Specify them as a coordinated arrangement rather than independent substitutes.
Starting versus speed control
A soft starter manages the motor starting process. An AC drive controls motor operation through a variable-frequency supply and may be relevant when speed control is required.
